Quaint Nuevo Progreso sits just minutes south of Weslaco and Mercedes. Small in scale compared to other border towns, this may be the perfect place for the first-time visitor to experience a Mexican border town. Its streets are lined with small malls, curio shops, clothes stores, boot stores, etc. The multistory Progreso Market has more than two dozen shops featuring arts and crafts from all over Mexico as well as a grocery section and a pharmacy.

The highway south leads to the larger border town of Rio Bravo, about 10 miles away. From there, you can go east to Matamoros or west to Reynosa. Rio Bravo is the center of a large farming area and has a growing industrial section with several maquiladora plants.

    In case you don't already know about this little Mexican border town, Nuevo Progreso has become THE place to shop for prescriptions, vanilla, liquor, tobacco, or Mexican gifts to take home to family and neighbors. Many people come to Nuevo Progreso for its many dentists, doctors and optometrists. Did we mention the great dining? Yes, they have that too. The shopping area is very compact, so most of everything you are looking for is located within four blocks. However, the real reason why Nuevo Progreso has become so prosperous is that it knows what it is. It is a haven for people who like to save money. The shop owners respect that and offer what may be the safest, cleanest and friendliest border town on the Mexico/U.S. border from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean.
